Brittany Grundy Killed in Indianapolis Post-Prom Shooting: 3 Injured at North Park Avenue Rental Home Party; IMPD Seeks Suspect.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN โ€“ What was supposed to be a night of celebrationโ€”a post-prom gathering filled with laughter, photos, and the promise of summerโ€”descended into horror early Sunday morning on Indianapolisโ€™ near north side. A shooting at a short-term rental home in the 4000 block of North Park Avenue left one teenager dead, two others wounded by gunfire, and a fourth person injured while fleeing the chaos.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) confirmed that officers responded to the scene just after 12:45 a.m. on May 3, following reports of a person shot. What they found was a scene of pandemonium: dozens of teenagers and young adults fleeing a property rented specifically for an after-prom party, shell casings scattered across the lawn, and at least one victim lying gravely wounded.

By sunrise, family members had identified the deceased as Brittany Grundy, a young woman whose life was cut short just as it was beginning. Two other victims remain hospitalizedโ€”one in critical conditionโ€”and a fourth suffered injuries while trying to escape the gunfire.

As of Sunday afternoon, IMPD has not announced any arrests or identified a suspect. The investigation remains active, with detectives canvassing the neighborhood, reviewing surveillance footage, and pleading with witnesses to come forward.

The Scene: A Rental Home, A Crowd, and Sudden Gunfire

The shooting took place in the 4000 block of North Park Avenue, a quiet residential street near the intersection of North College Avenue and 38th Streetโ€”an area known for its mix of family homes and short-term rentals popular with young people seeking event spaces.

According to IMPD Officer Samuel Heights, who spoke at a brief press conference Sunday morning, the gathering was a post-prom party. โ€œThis was not a small get-together. Based on witness statements, we believe at least 50 to 70 people were present, many of them teenagers who had attended proms at various high schools in the Indianapolis area earlier that evening.โ€

The property had been rented through a popular short-term rental platform. Neighbors told reporters they had complained about noise earlier in the night. โ€œYou could hear the music from three blocks away,โ€ said Margaret Crenshaw, who lives two doors down. โ€œAround midnight, it got louder. Then at 12:45, we heard popsโ€”maybe six or seven of them. At first I thought it was fireworks. Then came the screaming.โ€

IMPD officers arrived within four minutes of the first 911 call. When they entered the residence, they found one victim suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. That victim was later pronounced dead at the scene. Paramedics treated two additional gunshot victims at the location before transporting them to Methodist Hospital, where one remains in critical condition and the other is listed as stable with non-life-threatening injuries.

A fourth individual was treated at the scene for injuries sustained while fleeingโ€”believed to be a sprained ankle and minor cuts from broken glass.

Brittany Grundy: ‘A Bright Light Gone Too Soon’

Family members and close friends identified the deceased victim as Brittany Grundy. While IMPD has not officially released her name pending notification of all next of kin, loved ones gathered outside Methodist Hospital Sunday morning, holding photographs and weeping.

โ€œBrittany was the kind of person who lit up every room,โ€ said her cousin, Danielle Grundy. โ€œShe had just turned 18. She was so excited about prom. She showed me her dressโ€”it was emerald green. She said she felt like a princess.โ€

Friends described Brittany as a senior at Arsenal Technical High School, though IMPD has not confirmed her school affiliation. She was reportedly an honors student who worked part-time at a local daycare and dreamed of becoming a pediatric nurse.

โ€œShe didnโ€™t even want to go to the party at first,โ€ said Marcus Webb, a close friend who was with Brittany earlier that evening. โ€œHer mom convinced her to go and have fun because it was prom weekend. Now her mom has to plan a funeral.โ€

A makeshift memorial appeared Sunday afternoon outside the North Park Avenue rental home: flowers, a green candle, and a handwritten sign reading, โ€œRest in Paradise Brittany.โ€

The Three Injured Victims: Critical, Stable, and Fleeing

Of the three other individuals injured in the shooting, two were directly struck by gunfire. IMPD has not released their names or ages, citing privacy and the ongoing investigation. However, sources close to the families confirmed that one victim, a 17-year-old male, underwent surgery Sunday morning and remains in critical condition at Methodist Hospital.

The second gunshot victim, an 18-year-old female, was treated for a wound to the lower leg and is expected to recover fully.

The fourth victimโ€”the one injured while fleeingโ€”has been identified by family as Jasmine Carter, 19, who suffered a broken ankle after jumping from a second-story window to escape the gunfire. โ€œShe heard shots and just ran,โ€ said her mother, Tanya Carter. โ€œShe didnโ€™t even think. She just jumped. Sheโ€™s lucky to be alive.โ€

The Investigation: No Suspect, No Motive, and Few Witnesses Coming Forward

As of Sunday afternoon, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department has not released any information regarding a suspect or motive. Detectives are treating the case as a homicide and are actively investigating whether the shooting stemmed from an altercation inside the party, a targeted attack, or indiscriminate gunfire.

โ€œWe have reason to believe that multiple people inside that residence may have seen the shooter or shooters,โ€ said IMPD Lt. Monica Foster. โ€œBut so far, witnesses have been reluctant to come forward. We need the communityโ€™s help. Someone knows what happened.โ€

Officers have recovered several shell casings from at least two different calibers, suggesting more than one firearm may have been discharged. IMPD is also seeking surveillance footage from nearby homes and businesses, including a gas station at the corner of 38th Street and College Avenue.

The Marion County Coronerโ€™s Office will conduct an autopsy on Brittany Grundy to determine the official cause and manner of death. Preliminary findings are expected within 48 hours.

Post-Prom Gun Violence: A Disturbing National Trend

Sundayโ€™s shooting is not an isolated incident. Across the United States, post-prom and post-graduation parties have increasingly become scenes of gun violence. According to data from the Gun Violence Archive, there have been at least 14 shootings at school-sponsored or school-adjacent events in 2026 alone, resulting in nine deaths and more than 40 injuries.

โ€œThese are supposed to be celebrations of milestones,โ€ said Dr. Lena Okafor, a criminologist at IUPUI. โ€œBut when you combine large crowds of teenagers, the availability of short-term rental homes with little security, and easy access to firearms, you have a recipe for tragedy. Itโ€™s not unique to Indianapolisโ€”itโ€™s happening everywhere.โ€

In response to the shooting, the Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) district issued a statement Sunday afternoon: โ€œWe are heartbroken to learn of the tragedy that occurred overnight. Our condolences go out to the family of Brittany Grundy and to all those injured. We are offering grief counseling to students and staff tomorrow at all IPS high schools.โ€

Short-Term Rental Safety Under Scrutiny

The fact that the post-prom party was held at a short-term rental home has raised new questions about safety regulations and age restrictions on such properties.

Neighbors reported that the home on North Park Avenue had been rented out for parties before, despite a clause in the rental agreement explicitly prohibiting events. The platform on which the home was listed, which IMPD has not named, requires renters to be at least 21 years old. Investigators are looking into whether an adult rented the property on behalf of the teenagers.

โ€œWe are in contact with IMPD and will fully cooperate with their investigation,โ€ a spokesperson for the rental platform said in an emailed statement. โ€œThe property in question has been delisted pending the outcome of the investigation. We do not allow parties or events at our listings, and any violation of our policies results in permanent removal.โ€

City council members have previously proposed ordinances requiring short-term rentals to install noise monitors and limit occupancy, but those measures have yet to pass. โ€œThis tragedy may finally force the council to act,โ€ said Councilor Vickie Rhodes. โ€œA young woman is dead because a house was rented for a party with no supervision, no security, and no accountability.โ€

How to Help and What Comes Next

The family of Brittany Grundy has set up a memorial fund through True Vine Missionary Baptist Church on East 30th Street. Donations will go toward funeral expenses and a proposed scholarship in Brittanyโ€™s name for students pursuing nursing at Arsenal Technical High School.

The two injured gunshot victims remain hospitalized, and separate GoFundMe campaigns have been launched by their families. IMPD continues to urge anyone with informationโ€”including cellphone video, photographs, or firsthand accountsโ€”to contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-TIPS (8477). Tips can be submitted anonymously, and a reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest.

Official Statements

IMPD Chief Chris Bailey: โ€œWe lost a young woman last night. Her name is Brittany Grundy. She had her whole life ahead of her. Iโ€™m asking this communityโ€”donโ€™t let her death be for nothing. If you saw something, say something.โ€

Arsenal Technical High School Principal Dr. Marcus Ellis: โ€œBrittany was a student who showed up every day with a smile. She was kind, she was driven, and she represented the best of Tech. We are devastated.โ€

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb: โ€œMy heart aches for the family of Brittany Grundy and for all those injured in this senseless act of violence. We must do better to protect our children. State resources are available to IMPD as needed.โ€

Xavi News extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and classmates of Brittany Grundy, and to all those affected by the post-prom shooting on North Park Avenue. May the community find healing, and may justice be swift.
